This edition of SIG 8, Perspectives on Public Health Issues Related to Hearing and Hearing Balance focused on audiology and public health. There are two articles on different aspects of audiology. In the first article entitled, “Standardized Patients: Potential to Improve Student Training in Aural Rehabilitation”, Erin Picou and Ann Marie Tharpe explore the use of actors as patients to train the next generation of audiologists. The authors make the case for using such actors by outlining the benefits of interaction with real people and yet maintaining the control needed to guide students in their counseling and professional interaction skills. The second article, “Vocal Performance Teachers and Hearing Loss” by Vance Gunnell and Jeff Larsen, addresses the risk of noise-induced hearing loss among a group of professionals. On the occasion of the 2010 National Conference of Teachers of Singing (NATS), participants were given a survey and a hearing evaluation to document their years of teaching and the presence of any hearing loss. The results were both expected and surprising.
