Welcome to the November issue of Perspectives of Special Interest Group (SIG) 8, Public Health Issues Related to Hearing and Balance. SIG 8 is a community of audiologists and related professionals that seek to improve hearing quality of life for patients across the life course. We are a highly collaborative and diverse special interest group. This new issue of Perspectives discusses a range of current public health issues related to hearing and balance. Robin Williamson expands our understanding of the basic building blocks of genetics. Her article explores of how the complexity of moving from DNA to RNA to proteins can mutate and lead to genetic hearing. In their article, Jessica Messersmith and Lindsey Jorgensen examine the potential impact of the Affordable Care Act on insurance coverage of hearing healthcare. In his article James Blair describes how one brief therapy model might be used by audiologists to get better outcomes for our patient's.
